On The Design Wave In Real Life: Chapter 1

My new career path is beginning to take shape exactly as I envisioned. On one hand, I will develop a product line featuring my own Nove~Design creations, offering special and unique designs. On the other hand, I will provide professional interior design services.

I’m fortunate to have supportive friends who cheer me on. After deciding to leave a job I held for over a decade, I accepted my first interior design project—to furnish and decorate an entire house. Learning in class and completing assignments happens in a controlled environment, but taking on a real project can be both scary and intimidating. Once again, I chose to take it step by step, treating each part of the project carefully and setting a detailed plan with a timeline for every stage.

Step 1 – Gather as much information from the client as possible. Since there are many details, take thorough notes and prepare a template beforehand. Visit the space to observe the natural light, unique features of the house, and any potential challenges such as unusual wall angles or irregular room shapes. Understand the style and atmosphere the client desires by asking about their preferred design styles and colors that make them feel comfortable and happy. It’s essential to learn the intended function of each room by discussing the activities planned for those spaces. For example, a living room might not only be for watching TV; it could also be used for games, reading, or hobbies. Designing with these uses in mind ensures the space truly meets the client’s needs.

Now that I understand what my client wants, likes, and is looking for, I can move on to the next step: drawing a floor plan for each room. You might think this is unnecessary or a waste of time, but it’s actually one of the most crucial steps in any project. Having a clear view of the exact room dimensions, doorways, electrical outlets, and other details allows you to make informed design decisions and greatly reduces the chance of errors.
